Strengthening Healthcare and Nurturing Mental Well-being: Santé Arménie

News
20 October 2023

In the aftermath of the 2020 War that left Artsakh in turmoil, Santé Arménie arose as a ray of hope, casting its light upon a region in dire need of healing. Committed to revitalizing healthcare and promoting mental well-being, this extraordinary organization has etched its mark on the landscape of Armenia and Artsakh.

In response to the crisis, a group of volunteer health professionals from France, Belgium, and Switzerland joined forces, initiated by Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris. Their mission was clear: to provide essential medical and paramedical aid to the victims of the war. As they arrived in Armenia and Artsakh, they realized the enormity of the challenges faced by the healthcare system. This realization led to the birth of Santé Arménie, a French-Armenian organization with a vision to contribute to the long-term development of healthcare in Armenia and Artsakh.

Created at the initiative of Pr. Arsène Mekinian and with the support of AGBU (UGAB) France, Santé Arménie established itself in working groups, each specializing in various clinical areas. Their efforts focused on four key strategic areas:

  • Providing Care and Reinforcing Healthcare Infrastructure: Santé Arménie worked tirelessly to deliver care and enhance healthcare infrastructure in the Syunik region, where healthcare services were insufficient.
  • Continuous Training and Knowledge Transfer: The organization offered free online courses and in-person training to Armenian healthcare professionals and medical students, enabling them to improve their skills and provide better quality care.
  • Research and Development: Santé Arménie aimed to raise the bar of scientific research in Armenia, establishing a Clinical Research Center and a Biological Resource Center to collect data, process it, and contribute to scientific publications.
  • Partnerships with Armenian Institutions: Santé Arménie actively collaborated with Armenian institutions, notably the Ministry of Health, to create bridges between Armenian and European specialists.

Notably, Santé Arménie, which comprises nearly 200 volunteers and 25 employees, established a Rehabilitation Center in Goris to address chronic neurological and orthopedic pathologies, catering to adults aged 16 and above. A similar center for children is planned to open in 2024. Mobile units of primary care were also deployed to reach patients in remote villages, providing essential healthcare services.

Recognizing the psychological trauma faced by Armenians in the region, Santé Arménie employed psychologists trained by European counterparts. These professionals offered psychological care to individuals and groups, helping the population cope with the emotional toll of conflict.

One of the organization's core objectives is connecting Armenian and European specialists. Regular meetings facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration, empowering Armenian professionals to address complex medical cases effectively.

The H. Hovnanian Family Foundation provided assistance to Santé Arménie's impactful initiatives. The Foundation's support has sustained the organization's Research Center and Biological Resource Center, paving the way for advancements in medical research.

The support helps Santé Arménie to continue its transformative work in healthcare and mental well-being. Together, they are making a difference in the lives of those in Armenia and Artsakh, offering hope, healing, and a brighter future for all.
