19 June 2023

Since 2014, the Gata Festival has captivated visitors in Khachik village, Vayots Dzor region. Supported by the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation, this extraordinary event not only showcases the village's cultural heritage but also unlocks its economic potential.

The Gata Festival breathes life into Khachik village, drawing over 5,000 visitors each September. Amidst a backdrop of bountiful crops, festival-goers immerse themselves in a vibrant experience. Culinary delights take center stage, with the grandest gata, an Armenian pastry, growing larger each year. In 2017, the festival even achieved a record-breaking gata size, reaching a breathtaking diameter of approximately four meters.

Beyond food, the festival boasts traditional dishes, handicrafts, and local showcases. With a population of 1,000, the majority actively participate, offering guided tours, horseback riding, jeep tours, and masterclasses. Visitors are warmly welcomed into villagers' homes, where they witness age-old practices like lavash or gata baking, vodka distillation, and homemade noodle making. The enchanting glkhatun (Yerdik) houses and cultural heritage sites leave a lasting impression.

The Gata Festival is not just about Armenian culture—it showcases the resilient spirit of a community. National songs, dances, games, and ceremonies animate the cultural fabric, creating unforgettable moments. Lasting just a day, the festival's preparation spans eight months, reflecting the dedication of the organizers. Yet, the festival's significance extends beyond culture and tourism. It stands as a pillar of support for the border village, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 Artsakh War. By preserving and promoting traditions, the festival strengthens Khachik village's identity and heritage, ensuring their endurance for future generations.

In this captivating corner of Armenia, the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation invites you to join the Gata Festival. Together, let us celebrate culture, empower the community, and create cherished memories that leave a lasting impact on Khachik village's economic well-being!
